Dover Choral Society
The Choral Society celebrated its centenary in 1992.
For its first 55 years it was known as the Choral Union
but when it resumed activities after World War II it became the Choral Society in 1947. One of the driving
forces behind the choir for the first 30 years as the Borough organist, H J Taylor, who was its first director. His memorial concert in 1936 featured many of his compositions including the Dover Triumph song, first performed in 1908.
The society is still flourishing with about 100 members. Michael Foad was musical director until 2006. Steven Yarrow and Michael Lewis. Concerts are given at the Town Hall at Easter and in November every year using both professional and local soloists. The Choir also performs at the annual Come Carolling concert at the Town Hall organised by Christians Together in Dover. A regular and popular feature in recent years has been the Dover Proms concerts during Carnival Week in July when there is an open invitation for anybody to join the Prom choir. The roof of the Town Hall is raised when the traditional 'last night of the Proms' songs are sung, Union Jacks are waved and streamers 'popped'.
