Pandolfo, the Papal Legate, pronounces an interdict and calls upon King John to resign his Kingdom to the Church. While Richard was in the Holy Land - his brother John was regent. He levied taxes and was not a just man. He became king in 1199 and soon quarrelled with the Pope over the choice of Stephen Langton as Archbishop of Canterbury. The Pope placed England under an interdict. Services could only be held in chapels of the Knights Templar. He also excommunicated John. Eventually in 1213, John agreed that Langton should become Archbishop and that all punishments suffered by the clergy should be redeemed. On 15th May, John met with Pandolpho the Papal Legate at the Templars Preceptory in Temple Ewell. Pandulf was attended by Almeric, the Grand Master of Templars, and the Preceptor of Temple Ewell. Also present were knights and nobles. Kneeling before Pandulf, John surrendered his crown and placed into his hands the signed charter granting the Pope the Kingdoms of England and Ireland, which were to be held freehold for an annual rent of 1000 marks. Having sworn fealty John paid part of the money. Pandolfo returned the crown to John and walked on the money laid at his feet, signifying the subjugation of England. Two years later John was forced by his Barons to sign the great Magna Carta
