Alan Sugden, who had lived in the town for 30 years, died on June 7. His cremation took place at Barham on June 18, and a service of celebration for his life was held at London Road Methodist Church on Sunday 25th June 2003. His family asked people who attended the service to wear bright clothing, rather than black. Alan was a keen folk singer, had worked as Captain Crusty at the former White Cliffs Experience, and as manager of the YMCA in Dover, and was a Methodist lay preacher. Originally, a member of the Baptist Church, he joined the Methodist Church in Dover and become a lay preacher in 1993.
